Animals

Many exotic animals live in New Zealand, but those that are native to this country are: the tuatara, moa, kiwi, kōkako, saddleback, huia, kākāpō, native frogs and giant carnivorous land snails.

Let's go a little deeper into the Kiwi since it is the most predominant animal in NZ.

This type of animal is made up of five species endemic to New Zealand. They are small flightless birds, approximately the size of a chicken.

It was discovered in 1813, and it is estimated that there are currently around 68,000 kiwis in New Zealand, a huge drop from the population of 12 million centuries ago, according to the NGO Save the Kiwi.

Plants

The kauri (Agathis australis) is a species of conifer endemic to the northern North Island of New Zealand. It is the largest tree species in New Zealand (by volume) but not in height, rivaling the United States sequoia in the diameter of its trunk.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, kauri gum became a valuable commodity, particularly for the production of varnishes, and was the center of a considerable industry at the time.

This type of tree, with the arrival of the Europeans to New Zealand, was on the verge of disappearance.

It is the largest kauri tree that currently exists in the Waipoua forest and is estimated to be about 2000 years old. Some of the largest specimens felled in the last two centuries were much older.
